Just in case anyone wonders why this is important its covered by the
Transport (Conduct) Regulations 2005 .  SR No 69/2005  under part4 - General
Conduct affecting Safety ( on railway premises)

35.	Riding a bicycle etc.
r. 35
A person must not ride a bicycle, wheeled recreational device or wheeled toy
in or on a rail vehicle, road vehicle or rail premises.
Penalty: 10 penalty units.
	36.	Driving or riding a vehicle on rail premises
	(1)	A person must not drive, ride or park a vehicle on any part of rail
premises that is not set aside for the use of vehicles by the passenger
transport company or the rail freight operator that is responsible for the
premises or, if Rail Track is responsible for the premises, from Rail Track.
Penalty: 10 penalty units.
	(2)	A person who drives or rides a vehicle on rail premises must obey all
speed restrictions, traffic control signs and parking control signs
displayed on the premises.
Penalty: 10 penalty units.
	(3)	A person who drives or rides a vehicle on rail premises must not drive
in a manner likely to cause injury to or to endanger any person or to damage
property.
Penalty: 10 penalty units.
	(4)	A person who drives or rides a vehicle on rail premises must not park
the vehicle so as to cause an obstruction.
Penalty: 10 penalty units.
Reg. 36(5) amended by S.R. No. 86/2006 reg. 4(Sch. item 1.5).
	(5)	A person who drives or rides a vehicle on rail premises must comply
with directions about driving, riding or parking of vehicles from an
authorised person (conduct).
10 penalty units.

Hi all,

A heads up just in case you're about to ride home and travel through the
underpass at Rushall Station in North Fitzroy.

Last evening (9/1/08) about 4.50 - 5pm, a cyclist was instructed to walk
his bike through the underpass by three men on the Merri Creek side of
the path. He assumes they were Connex staff, as they had fluoro vests on
over their blue shirts obscuring pocket logos.

One stood out from the group blocking the riders path and waved his
finger at at the rider, then said words to the effect that:

"You will have to wheel your bike through here in future, penalties will
apply from tomorrow".

Now there has been signage up at the underpass denoting that cyclists
should indeed dismount, however it has never been enforced to my knowledge.

Invariably most cyclists using the underpass do use tact and
commonsense, i.e.: slowing down, ringing their bells and maintaining a
look out for other users.

However, like others no doubt,  I'm mildly incredulous that no
communication has occured prior to this to advise these sudden changes
or any alternative solutions made.

I'm attempting to find out if this rule change is permanent or a
one-off. If you encounter any behaviour similar to what is quoted above,
please remain polite, ask these people who they are, make note of the
time and please send a email to YarraBUG.
