[YarraBUG-list] [Fwd: Lygon Court Parking & Main Yarra Trail Closure at Burnley Wharf]

Hi all.

Returning to the message sent on Wednesday, it seems that the Carlton
Business Association emails are bouncing, so it maybe something as minor
as a server issue or maybe CBAI need more money to pay their bills?

Maybe they require more people to visit Lygon St businesses whilst
riding their bicycles? So either contact them via snail mail or vote
with your wheels. ;)

cheers,

Chris

Also, message from Justin from Melb BUG: On Tuesday March 4, Melbourne
Council's planning committee will vote on a proposal to remove 2 or 3
car parking spaces and install bike parking for up to 28 bikes in place
of it. This would be a great result and needs your support! Please send
emails of support to the Planning Committee and individual Melbourne
councillors:

Hi all,

Two items for your attention,

- Bicycle Parking at Lygon Court
- Trail Closure at Burnley Wharf

1. Bicycle Parking at Lygon Court
Just over the Yarra border is the delightful suburb of Carlton, and no
doubt many of us are are very familar with the long running issue of the
lack of adequate bicycle parking in front of Lygon Court. Quote from The
Age (16 February)

http://www.theage.com.au/news/national/charge-for-road-use-urges-parking-expert/2008/02/15/1202760604797.html

" ... The (Melbourne)council is set to remove parking spaces in Lygon
Street to make way for bike parking. But Carlton trader groups have
opposed a plan to remove two spaces in front of the Lygon Court shopping
centre to create parking for 28 bikes.

"More bike parking isn't going to bring more business," Carlton Business
Association president Connie Paglianiti said. ..."

So as this longrunning issue is finally making progress, a local traders
association is of the opinion that bicycle parking doesn't bring trade to
local businesses? If you would like to show your warm support for improved
bicycle facilties out the front of Lygon Court, then why not *politely*
contact the Carlton Business Association and Melbourne City Council to
show your strong support.

Feel free to include these suggestions:
- Why you go to Lygon Street and it's scintillating attractions,
- Why you prefer to ride your bicycle there,
- Why bicycle secure parking is extremely important to you and also
improving the street,
- Of course, if there was more secure bicycle parking, you and all your
friends would visit more and spent more money at local businesses. ;))

2. Main Yarra Trail Closure at Burnley Wharf
>From Parks Victoria: There will be a short term closure on the Main Yarra
Trail. The closure will affect the floating pontoon section of the trail
outside the Parks Victoria depot (where the gate opens to allow the boats
in and out of the harbour). The purpose for the closure is to replace the
timber base and non slip coating of the eastern end ramp.

The diversion route is the same as currently exists as an option for
cyclists and pedestrians when the harbour gate is open and the gates at
each end closed. If travelling towards the city the diversion takes you
along Barkly Avenue to a left turn into Mary Street and at the end of Mary
street through an underpass and back onto the Main Yarra Trail.

When: Thursday 28/2/08. Between 10am and 2pm
Where: Melways Map 2H B2, C1

Why: Ramp surface needs replacing. A thicker timber base and new nonslip
surface will be installed.

How: The timber work has been prepared and coated off site. It will simply
be a matter of lifting the old timber and laying the new.

Cyclists and pedestrians will be advised by Parks Victoria staff at each
end of the closure as to the diversion route. It is anticipated that we
will again close the trail in identical circumstances in the near future
to resurface the 2nd ramp (western end of floating pontoon section).
