[YarraBUG-list] Fwd: Wellington St Copenhagen lane Report

Dear all,

At this months Yarra Council meeting on Tuesday 18th September (refer to
Alistair McDonald's email below this one!) the report for the Wellington
Street Copenhagen lanes will be tabled.

There is local opposition expected from businesses about loss of parking
spaces.

Here's some tips if you wish to make a short verbal submission in
support at this council meeting:

  * Keep your verbal submission polite, concise (try to aim for 3-4
    minutes) and remain on message.

  * Do not harangue, insult or belittle any opposing views, instead
point out the positive aspects. Our local roads are shared spaces
and can be easily negotiated when good will exists between all road
    users.

  * Please emphasise the positive aspects of more people being able to
ride on Copenhagen-style lanes, who may not of previously considered
    it as a transport opinion.

  * In Sydney, when the cycleways were proposed in the CBD there was
strong opposition when the first separated cycleways were proposed
and then built, particularly from businesses, with dire predictions
of ruination. But, after they are built and the dust has settled,
it's all fine. None of the dire predictions came true. Businesses
are now attracted to the area because of the cycleway, and there are
letters from residents who don't ride, saying that the street is
more pleasant and friendly than ever before. Pedestrian malls
create the same sort of angst, including Pitt Street Mall in Sydney
which now has the highest retail rents in the country (with no on
    street parking or passing traffic).

  * Read more about Sydney Cycleways: http://sydneycycleways.net/

  * Read more about generally how bicycles can be good for business:
    http://www.cyclingpromotion.com.au/content/view/214/145/

  * This proposed treatment to Wellington St is absolutely vital - in
the light of the loss of VicRoads budget funding this year and
increased numbers of people riding. If we lose this opportunity it
will be incrementally harder to get infrastructure improvements on
this scale for a very long time & will make implementing the current
Yarra Bike Strategy even more difficult.

So basically, if you wish to attend this public meeting, emphasise the
bigger picture, about creating a better, healthier (including
economically) environment for everyone's benefit.

Dear BAC

I am pretty happy to announce that the report for Wellington St
Copenhagen lanes has been completed and will be tabled before council n
the 18^th September 2012. The meeting will start at 6:30pm and will be
located at the Fitzroy Town Hall at 201 Napier Street.

This is a public meeting -- short verbal submissions are possible to the
Councillors on this topic.

The Officer report outlines the community consultation results, provides
Officer comment on the submissions, provides comment on alternatives and
outlines options for Council's consideration.

It is important to note that the Officer recommendation is not asking
for a decision on the project at this point in time. If sought by
Council it is expected that a further report from Officers would be
provided to Council after the local government elections -- at this
stage a report would likely to be presented to Council in late November
or December. Should Council at that time seek to advance the proposal,
it would then need to direct officers to undertake detailed design and
present that back to the Council for further consideration.

If Council requests this further report, all submitters who provided
their email addresses would also be notified of the meeting later this
calendar year.

Below is a link to the council website where the Agenda and Attachments
for meeting on the 18^th September can be found for your information.

Thanks for your input throughout the process. This project could be
Yarra's first Copenhagen Lanes.
