The Indian Pacific Wheel Race: It’s a gloomy summer’s morning as Val and Faith welcome Sarah Hammond and Jesse Carlsson to the studio. We kick off with our respective bike moments, before moving on to local bike news incuding Damien Howson’s win in the Herald Sun Tour and the 2016 Cycling Victoria Awards.
Jesse introduces us to the Indian Pacific Wheel Race, coming up in March, talking about the inpiration behind the event, the history of intrepid overlanders in Australia and the type of race he hoped to create. Sarah Hammond tells us what she is looking forward to in the race and the novelty for Australian racers of riding on home turf. Both are looking forward to seeing the community response to the race, particularly as riders come through major cities such as Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney and we discuss the type of support riders might enjoy along the route.
We finish up with some local events including Melbourne Bike Rave this weekend and the World Naked Bike Ride, which unfortunately won’t co-incide with the the Melbourne leg of the Indian Pacific Wheel Race.
We didn’t have the chance to mention it on the show but cyclists in the City of Yarra and particularly those who approach Napier St from Edinburgh Gardens may want to have a look at the Protect Fitzroy North website about a planned development that will have a big impact on this route in terms of car traffic.
