Blessing of the Bicycles
News from City of Yarra: Blessing of the Bikes celebrates cycling:Edinburgh Gardens will play host to hundreds of cyclists and their bikes when Yarra’s second annual Blessing of the Bikes is held on Sunday 4 October.
Yarra Mayor Cr Amanda Stone said the event was a celebration of cycling, with blessings from a number of faiths. Jointly organised by Yarra City Council and the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne, the event will be held in the gardens, near the rotunda in St Georges Road, from 12pm-1pm. “Yarra has the highest rate of cycling of any Victorian municipality, so it makes sense that we would be home to this celebration of all things cycling,” Cr Stone said. “All cyclists and bicycle enthusiasts, including serious riders and families with children on tag-alongs and tricycles, are welcome to enjoy an hour relaxing in the park,” she said.
Time: October 4, 2009 from 12pm to 2pm
Location: The Rotunda, Edinburgh Gardens
Street: St Georges Road, City/Town: City of Yarra
Yarra Draft Bicycle Strategy
http://www.yarracity.vic.gov.au/Consultation/Bicycle%20Strategy.asp
Council is seeking feedback from local residents, businesses and other community members about its draft Bicycle Strategy 2010-2015.
- Download the draft strategy (PDF file, 2.73M)
The draft strategy seeks to establish a long term vision for cycling in Yarra. It details actions and timelines for improvements to the on and offroad bicycle network and other infrastructure (including bike parking facilities) so Council maximises bicycle use in Yarra. The draft strategy sets a clear goal for Council to more than double the rate of Yarra residents cycling to work from 6.4% to 15% by 2015. Hard copies of the draft strategy are available at the Richmond and Collingwood Town Halls and at the five Yarra Libraries.
Submissions about the draft strategy must be made before Thursday 22 October 2009. Please forward your comments to Council’s Co-ordinator Transport Mark Kulyk c/o Yarra City Council, PO Box 168, Richmond 3121 or at mark.kulyk[AT]yarracity.vic.gov.au
Council’s Planning, Environment and Infrastructure meeting will formally consider all submissions received at its meeting at the Fitzroy Town Hall on Tuesday 1 December, at 8pm. Council is expected to adopt the strategy, with any amendments required, at its full Council meeting at the Fitzroy Town Hall on Tuesday 15 December 2009, from 7pm.
Amy Gillett Foundation – A Meter Matters
Can you help the AGF make our roads safer for cyclists? Research has shown that around two thirds of serious cyclist accidents occur during peak hours on weekdays, with most resulting from contact with motor vehicles. We also know that many of these accidents happen in daylight on straight, open, city roads, implying the issue is motorist awareness of cyclists rather than road conditions. This has resulted in the new Amy Gillett Foundation campaign ‘a metre matters’ aimed at encouraging motorists to provide more space on the road to cyclists.

The Bicycle Film Festival Returns to Melbourne this November 12 – 29
From the Bicycle Film Festival: The BFF is back and better than ever before. This November we will be hitting the streets of Melbourne to celebrate every aspect of bike culture, and we want you to take part. To complement our program of international films, we are pleased to be working with Human Powered Cafe in Thornbury to present a program of locally made films about bikes. We are looking for locally made films with a strong theme or character of bicycles. This includes all mediums and styles such as animation, experimental, narrative, documentary and music videos. The films can be up to feature-length but shorts are preferred.
We want films about bikes, cyclists, and the local bike scene. If you have a film about your biking community, about the first bike you ever rode, about bike riding and how it fits into your life, or a film that features bikes in any way – we want to hear from you. We are looking for films with an artistic or narrative quality that inspire people to get on a bike!
