Petition feedback: Collingwood, Carlton and Richmond

Our petition “Don’t risk our safety in 2025 – tell Yarra Council not to remove safe cycling lanes” has received over 1100 responses!
We asked people to answer to add their connection to Yarra (e.g: do you live, work, study, shop, go out, and/or commute in or through the Yarra area).
This is what people from Richmond, Collingwood and Carlton said.
- Abbotsford, Cremorne, Fitzroy + Fitzroy North
- Melbourne CBD, Parkville, Brunswick + Brunswick East
- Hawthorn, Kew and inner east suburbs
- Live and work here and commute through it.
- Live
- I live in the city of Yarra and I commute by bicycle every day with my two small children in tow. I fervently believe we need more bike lines not less.
- Homeowner in Collingwood. Work, commute and live in the area.
- I do live in Collingwood.
- I ride to work throughout the Yarra area. It already feels unsafe when not every road has a bike lane… so PLEASE don’t remove any! If anything you need to make it MORE safe!
- Love in Yarra and commute through the Yarra corridor on bike regularly
- I live in Yarra
- Live
- Live in the area. Commute on these lanes everyday for work.
- Live in and commute to and from work
- I use these lanes to commute to work every week multiple times a week
- I live, work and shop in the Yarra and rely on my bicycle to get me there
- I live, work and go out in the Yarra area. I believe we need to expand, not contract, the amount of cycling infrastructure to support a more livable and green society.
- We are long term Yarra residents. I cycle commute regularly and greatly appreciate the ever evolving cycling infrastructure.
- My now 20 and 21 year old children have grown into avid cyclists to the extent that my 20 year old passed his driving test 3 weeks ago and is still to go for his first solo drive….he sees no need yet for a car trip.
- We have been able to raise the next generation of sustainable travellers through the thoughtful and sometimes courageous community ncil decisions that have made non car committing the logical choice.
- Please, let’s not go backwards.
- live
- We live school childcare work and commute throughout the Yarra area
- We use bikes when we can as road infrastructure is becoming increasingly gridlocked and inefficient
- It would be good to get some
- Dedicated car spaces changed to bike parking areas – particularly around the busier shopping streets
- Live, work, shop and commute nearly always by my bike did to efficiency and current safety – please do not remove these lanes!
- I Live, work, shop, go out in Yarra
- I live, work, shop, go out, commute in Yarra
- I’ve lived here for over three years. I shop here, I go out here and I do a lot of those things on my bike.
- I live and commute through Yarra on my bike most days, it’s one of the safest places to cycle and it would be a terrible backwards step to remove existing infrastructure.

- Live and work here
- I work and live in Yarra
- I have lived here my entire life, a lot of my friends also live inner North and have started to cycle more themselves.
- We rely on these protective structures not just for safety but for survival.
- Roads are increasingly becoming more busy and drivers in Melbourne aren’t known for their patience either. These bike lanes ensure cars are separated from bike lanes.
- I spend almost my entire life in Yarra. Live here, shop here, go out here and work here. I cycle to work every day in abbortsford
- I live in Yarra and cycle around a lot, we need safe and good cycle lanes!
- I spend my whole life in Yarra on a bike. Work, live, play!
- Live and work in Collingwood.
- Work
- I work in the City of Yarra seven days a week across a few jobs. I spend at least one hour a day riding bike paths across the breadth of the city of Yarra. While our bike infrastructure has significant room for improvement, it is the best in Melbourne (maybe Australia), and doing anything to reduce that would be a supremely poor decision that conflicts with City of Yarra’s self described values.
- Live and work in Yarra
- Im a teacher at Melbourne girls college and commute to Richmond on my bike everyday. I use the bike lines on Elizabeth st daily, they are a great asset. Their removal would add an unwelcome danger to my daily travel. Please do not remove our bike lanes.

- Live
- I have lived at the above address since 1970, so have had a strong to the cities of Melbourne and Yarra. My children went from child care through to Year 12 in Melbourne/Yarra. I have worked in Yarra, I shop, commute, cycle, walk… and enjoy all the wonders offered to me by this community.
- I am a resident and my main form of transport and recreation is the bicycle
- I live and spend most of my time in Yarra.
- Commute
- Bike lanes promote healthy lifestyle choices, lower carbon pollution, decrease traffic congestion…. Car parks, on the other hand, are a waste of space. INCREASE cycling infrastructure and make neighbourhoods more walkable. Local businesses will THRIVE with better pedestrian access rather than a few paltry car parks nearby. Make the streets inclusive rather than exclusive and we all grow.
- Live and commute in Yarra
- Live, work, go out and commute in Yarra area
- Live
- I have lived in Princes Hill for 50 plus years and as A La escape architect and urban designer have consistently lobbied for street design that maximises greening.safety and amenity for pedestrians and cyclists. Yarra should be dong much more in this area and backwards steps are very unfortunate when so little is being done properly.
- I live and work in Yarra. Biking is my transport.
- I ride through every morning. These bike lanes are essential.
- Not everyone can drive a car & public space should not be cluttered with overwhelming amount of private vehicles parked for free. Australian Standards have been established for safe bicycle lanes & Councillors should not be making up their own standards & risk peoples’ safety. I live in a home I own in Yarra because I can walk & ride better here than most places. Please don’t reduce amenity by prioritising private car use
- I live in Yarra and by enabling safe and pleasant walking and cycling I spend most of my time and money within Yarra. If I get in my car I can go anywhere.
- I’m a cyclist and resident of the city of Yarra.
- I live, shop go out and commute in the yarra area
- Resident since 1975
- Regular visitor by bike
- I live in Carlton North and use my bicycle to shop and visit friends all over Yarra. I prefer riding on streets, following the road rules, than riding on mixed-use bike paths. But, I would feel much less safe doing so if dedicated bike lanes were removed.
- I live, shop and work in Yarra. I encourage and support people to use cycling as a means of transport. I believe it’s the way forward to a better future for all of us.
- The best way councils an support community in safer transport (fewer crashes, injuries and deaths as well as better overall physical and mental short and long term health) is by improving transport options that do not involve driving a car. Protected cycling lanes on streets/roads and connected safe cycling routes are incredibly important to achieving these aims, as well as having the added benefit of reducing vehicle traffic > pollution from vehicles > crashes/road rage/pollution/damage to roads etc that more motor vehicles have introduced to our community.
- I live in Carlton North, work in Fitzroy, and socialise throughout Yarra.
- Don’t jeopardise what makes Yarra great just for some short-term political point-scoring.
- Any proposal to remove or abandon safe cycling infrastructure in Yarra is an affront to our active, liveable neighbourhoods.
- Resident who cycles everywhere local

- Resident who cycles everywhere local
- I live and commute by bike in Yarra, including along Elizabeth Street
- Keep Yarra as a progressive green council putting bikes/pedestrians before cars. Let’s not go backwards
- I’m a resident and use my bike and scooter to easily commute to shops in the area, often to local shops that if I didn’t feel safe to ride a bike/scooter too I’d more likely drive to a shopping centre outside Yarra and spend my money elsewhere
- Live
- I live, shop and commute from Yarra – all by bike with my family.
- I live, work, exercise and go out in Yarra and I use my bike everyday to get between all of those. The cycling infrastructure is absolutely crucial. If I wasn’t able to cycle I’d have to drive far more. We actually need more and better cycle lanes not fewer
- I live in Cremorne and my wife bikes several times a week, and I want her to be safe on the roads!
- I live in Richmond Terrace and am active in the broader locale. I am very concerned about safe infrastructure for cyclists, particularly for the safety of my sons and their families when using their bikes in Richmond.
- I live and ride my bike in Yarra.
- I live in Yarra and use these routes regularly. it will only make things more dangerous.
- Live in Yarra. Shop, go out, commute in and through Yarra most days
- I live in Yarra and ride everywhere as my form of transport. I use the Elisabeth Street route to the city a number of times a week.
- I live in Yarra and use the bike lanes everyday for my commute to work. With severe lack of awareness from drivers for cyclists already, removing bike lanes will increase accident rates hugely!
- My family live, work, attend schools, commute, shop and create in Yarra
- Commute

- I ride every day because of these lanes. I wouldn’t and couldn’t safely without them.
- All of the above
- I live in Yarra
- I live in Richmond and bike to work everyday. I don’t own a car. I have to avoid cycling on roads that don’t have cycle lanes due to how many close calls I have had with cars. Cycle lanes are essential to my safety.
- All of the above
- I live in Richmond and ride to work
- Hi, I live, ride to work, shop with my bike and I’m an older woman.
- I live in Richmond
- Live, play, and commute in and through Yarra.
- Live locally
- Live here
- Live and own property here
- Owner occupier
- I cycle 5 days a week
- Lanes are an integral part of our traffic infrastructure , don’t make it even harder and more dangerous by removing them. Look at Europe and how well they work there. This is a very short sighted move.
- Live and commute by bike throughout Yarra City
- Live, work, shop, go out and commute in and through the Yarra area
- Live, shop, and go out
- Live
- I live in Richmond on Elizabeth Street. The safe cycling lanes get an enormous amount of usage and provide a safe haven for commuters, families and delivery riders alike
- Home owner
- Live
- Live and go out in Yarra.
- I live in Yarra and use the Elizabeth st bike lanes every week. I feel safe riding into and out of the CBD using this route. Making the lanes narrower would make it difficult for cyclists to pass each other and have to take risks riding out into the traffic lanes. For the sake of some car parking spots is it really worth it.
- Live, shop, go out.
- Live in Yarra
- Live in
- I live in Richmond – bike lanes are so important. We should have more and less car traffic so children can play on the streets.
- I love here with my partner who uses these bike lanes to get to work safely each day.
- Surely we aren’t going to go backwards and make it even harder for people to cycle??
- Live and work in Yarra. I cycle to and work in the Yarra area 5 days a week.
- I live in Yarra
- I live, work and commute in Richmond.

- Live
- I live, work, shop and go out in Yarra. It’s a wonderful community, and cycling lanes like the ones on Elizabeth St in Richmond, which I use constantly, make it so much easier to get around. Please keep them
- Live in Yarra & commute through Yarra (walking)

- I live, work and play here.
- Live, work, walk, ride and drive in Richmond and surrounds
- Live!
- Live work shop commute by bike/escooter and go out
- Live, work and play in Yarra.
- Removing bike lanes not only endangers ALL road users but will also discourage residents in the LGA and neighbouring areas to visit – this will impact local streets like Bridge and Victoria.
- I note cr jolly has been quite vocal about Victoria street lately – perhaps improved bike amenity will help revitalise the area?
- I live in Richmond
- Work, live and commute in Yarra
- Go to school
- Work and live in Yarra. Remove cars from our roads!
- I work and live in Yarra and spend most time here. Cars are not the answer for inner-city. Look at Amsterdam, We are already the Amsterdam of Melbourne but to be on Amsterdam or Copenhagen level, we have a long way to go. Active transportation reduces pollution, reduce emissions and encourages more people to ride as well as immense benefit in reducing healthcare and wellness being cost. Thank you for considering?
- Commute to work
- These bike lanes are amazing, please add more!
- I live and shop here, and ride a lot here!
- Bikes for life bikes for life and less congestion. My child should be able to ride to school with the safety of a bike claim.
- I live and love living in Richmond, riding into the city and along the Yarra.
- I ride my bike to work everyday in the city. do my grocery shopping in richmond area, to go to my dental chiropractic appointments on the weekend. I do ride my bike to the city to my dance classes everyday. My partner uses his bike everyday toomo
- Work, live, shop, go out, commute and ride around Yarra.
- I live and work in Yarra and cycle to work every day.
- My household lives 50m from Elizabeth St. Those bike lanes are our’ safe route to school, sport, shopping and work.
- I live, work, shop, eat and play with my small family in Yarra. I walk my oldest daughter to kindergarten. We walk to activities and parks together. We hope to replace our car with a bicycle so that we can use our backyard for living instead of having a parked car and get more exercise in our daily life. We need safe cycling and walking as well as mixed zoning to be able to do this.
- Richmond Resident
- The bike lane along Elizabeth street is a valuable connection into the city that I cycle along every day. The good cycle infrastructure is one of the reasons I appreciate living in the city of Yarra. It is a move in the wrong direction to downgrade cycle infrastructure and many residents will be affected by reduced bicycle safety.
- I live, work and commute through the Yarra area on a daily basis
- Live in Yarra and ride these lanes basically every day. They’re excellent. Making them narrower achieves nothing
- I live in Richmond and commute to work daily via bike.
- I am a local and use these footpaths on Elizabeth st daily to walk my dog.
- I live next to a separated bike lane. I use them to commute to work every day, as well as all my shopping and most of my other travel.
- You only have to cross the yarra to Hawthorn to see what badly designed bike lanes look like, do not make the same obvious mistakes that the next council over already does.
- Cycling is hard enough and if removing cycle lanes it will make less appeling to people and incres traffic as peple will have to drive increasing wait times.
- I cycle from richmond to footcray and its joke how there is paths but in last 3 days amout of near misses as cars wondering into unprotected bike lanes. Also the cycle way bridge still not open after competed its a joke right?
- I live in Yarra
- I live in Yarra, commute through Yarra and recreate (cycling and running) in Yarra. I shop in Yarra and go out in Yarra.
- I live in Yarra and commute through it on bike all the time. I also work in Yarra and cycle to work. I try to avoid cycling on main roads, and protected cycling lanes are a god send.
- I use Elizabeth St and baker St bike lanes to commute to work.
- The bike lanes on Elizabeth will be dangerous if they are narrower. There is frequently tree branches, broken bottles, car doors and pedestrians crossing into the bike lane that need to be dodged.
- I use Elizabeth St because it is a protected lane, as it is very easy to be doored in regular bike lanes and I have had many near misses in other streets.
- I live in Yarra and use the Elizabeth St bike lane on a daily basis.
- I live in Richmond and commute into the city using the coppin and Elizabeth st bike lanes
- Live, shop and child goes to school in the Yarra area
- I live in Richmond. I ride my bike as my main method of transport (along with public transport).

- I live, work and commute through the Yarra council.
- I ride with my child on the bike with me and am concerned at the lack of safety when travelling, particularly with children, if bike lanes are to be reduced or removed.
- This would be a disastrous move backwards and against light mode of transpor which are, on top of being good for mental and physical health, supporting less cars on the road and a more sustainable environment.
- Live, shop, commute in Yarra, often with children on my bike. Protected bike lanes are very important to separate cyclists and cars.
- I live in the City of Yarra and always commute to work in the CBD on my bicycle.
- Cycling is the best way to commute, it should be encouraged and made safer by adding more bike lanes instead of removing them.
- It is especially dangerous commuting in the afternoon peak hour traffic when car drivers are distracted by their day at work and rushing to get home.
- I live in Richmond and the main source of transport for myself and my 2 year old is by bike. We ride all around Richmond, Abbotsford and Collingwood. We ride to and from childcare, the supermarket, the park, the doctors, and everything else.
- Yarra Council should be adding more dedicated bike lanes. To think that the council is considering removing existing bike lanes is a great shame.
- Resident
- Live & commute by bike
- I have lived here my whole life [], I went to Richmond Swimming Club as a child till teenager. BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY… I COMMUTE BY RIDING! Even with these safe bike lines, I still feel unsafe amongst the other issues on the road like potholes (Especially along Gipps St, and Wellington St. between Johnson St and Alexandra Parade)! Do not remove these! Richmond and most suburbs in the east are so unsafe for cyclists already. Please contact me further as I have much to discuss
- Live work shop eat and commute all in Richmond
- I live in yarra and ride my bike to work
- I live in Richmond – work in the CBD, and cycle to and from work. I feel like I risk my life (had so many close calls) by riding my bike on roads and streets in the city. The separated bike lanes are fabulous and completely necessary for safe travel (especially with agro drivers on the roads). Roads are for transporting people and goods from A to B, not specifically for cars – so that mentality needs to go. If Melbourne is going to double in size between now and 2050 – there will be no driving anywhere as it will be absolute gridlock. Active and public transport will be key.
- I live, shop and go out in and through the Yarra area.
- I have lived and worked in Yarra for 8 years. I ride everywhere, as do my wife and children. The bike lanes are an integral part of our daily experience.
- I live and commute through the Yarra area constantly and am very active in the cycling community
- I live in Richmond and commute, predominantly by bicycle into the CBD. The connection between Elizabeth Street over Hoddle and up through East Melbourne makes this exceptionally easy. In bad weather, I’ll catch the train – again all very easy which is what inner-city living is about.
- I cycle a fair bit through Richmond outside of my commute, and in general it’s very good as it stands today. With a bit of familiarity and or planning, the current infrastructure is pretty good and safe. Could more be done? Sure but I strongly oppose removing existing infrastructure.
- I almost exclusively shop in Richmond too. Typically a mix of walking and a big weekly shop by car.
- I live in Yarra city council and cycle on Elizabeth St regularly to get to work. There is no other safe cycling option to get from my house to work.
- I live, work, commute through, and go out in Richmond.
- Live in Yarra and ride my bike regularly though the streets. I also drive and appreciation the separation and safety that bike lanes provide for all road users.
- I live in Yarra
- I live and work in Yarra, my kids go to school in Yarra, we shop and go out in Yarra and we all ride our bikes in and through Yarra everyday.
- I work and live in Richmond. Encouraging people to use cars rather than bikes is gormless.
- I live in Yarra and frequently ride my bicycle around the area and into the city
- I live and work from home in Richmond and often cycle to a variety of destinations including the city, and within Richmond to visit family, shop, work and eat.
- I grew up here, currently living and working within yarra. This is my home and I never want to ruin it by driving here.
- Live and commute
- I live in Richmond and use these lanes every day to commute to Parkville. I also cycle with kids and appreciate the protection they offer.
- I live in Yarra, and use the fabulous Copenhagen lanes on Elizabeth street to commute to work daily. Those lanes have given me the confidence to ride into the city. Please keep them!!
- Please don’t touch these bike lane, I use them every day to commute to and from work. Removing Elizabeth st in particular makes no sense as theres no gain in parking, no gain in car travel lanes and it links into the City of Melbourne Albert St Corridor. There might be a small cost saving as the temporary infrastructure needs to be made permanent and presumably ripping it out is cheaper.
- I drive when the weather is terrible or do to my shopping/ other random reasons and I love my car. But your intention to remove these lanes will be a. net big pain for me.
- I live in Yarra and use the coppin st intersection daily on my bike
- I live in Richmond.
- Live, study, commute
- All of the above
- I live in Coppin Street. Keep the bike lanes.
- I live in Coppin Street, the bike lanes are awesome. My kids both go to school in Richmond and will continue to throughout their high school as well. Keep them.
- I live, work and shop in Yarra. I use the Coppin St bike lane since it completes a safe biking route from my home to Gleadell St Market and shops, shops around Citizens park and Lennox & Victoria. I use the Elizabeth St bike lane as the safest, quickest connection to my office in the CBD.
- Live in Yarra.
- I live in Yarra
- I live and work in Richmond and rely on the safe cycling network everyday.
- I live just off Elizabeth’s street and use the Elizabeth and Nicholson street separated bike lanes. My kids aged 10 and 14 do also. Please keep them!
- Work and play all through Richmond and my family all ride throughout the city. It’s much safer for my kids to ride on the bike lanes. Otherwise it would be back to the footpath for them.
- Live, shop and go out
- I live in Yarra and ride my bike through it on the bicycle lanes to get to work.
- I live work and study in Richmond and don’t have a car. I want more north and south safe cycling routes, the existing city routes are good already. I’d like to see bike bus transport lanes during peak student transport times
- Live and cycle here.
- I live in Richmond
- Work and use these lanes for my commute.
- Live in Yarra and have worked several jobs around here.
- I live, go out and shop in Richmond and throughout Yarra.
- I use Coppin St to cycle to the Richmond pool. I work as a swim instructor and cycling to the pool is simply the best way to travel there. Driving is an issue with the possibility of a parking fine with only 2 hour parking around the RRC
- I live and work in Yarra – all in Richmond. I have a family here & my kids and I use the bike network to get around safely – to get to school, to get to work and cycle around for recreation.
- Our family lives and works in Richmond.
- Loved in Richmond for 15years and I dont drive. Bike riding is my only way of getting around with my 5year old
- I live in Yarra. In particular Cremorne. If you remove safe cycling spaces then I and many others like me will jump in my car to run errands. This will add enormously to the car driving citizens of Yarra. If you want to look after car drivers then do everything possible to keep cycling safe.
- I ride to work in the city using Elizabeth St bike lanes in both directions. I also ride around Yarra for shopping, visiting and recreation. Please continue to make Yarra safer for cycling, not less safe.
- I live, shop, cycle, work, and spend most of my time in Yarra. Nearly all of my social activities are here and it’s a privilege to call Yarra my home, especially as a cyclist. Would love to keep seeing it improve its cycling infrastructure!
- I am a long term resident of Richmond, and I regularly cycle around all corners of the suburb, as well as to other parts of the City of Yarra (Abbotsford and Collingwood) Elizabeth Street and Coppin Street are two of the streets that I often ride along, and the high quality bicycle lanes in general are vital to safe passage around the suburb. I remember regularly commuting by bicycle along Elizabeth St before the creation of the current protected bicycle lane and it did not feel anywhere as safe.
- Creating conditions that encourage people to cycle helps to reduce car congestion and promotes healthier lifestyles.
- I live work and shop in the Yarra area
- I live in Cremorne and use my bike to commute to places like the shops, gym and cafes – I barely ever drive. I am also a professional cyclist and Olympian, and rely on the bike lanes to do my job (training) safely. One of my best friends who I met and knew through my cycling club, Angus Collins, was killed when commuting across Melbourne 2 years ago, so this is a matter close to my heart. It is scary and dangerous enough riding around Melbourne and Yarra as it is due to the high volume of cars & driveways as well as negative driver attitudes towards cyclists – removing any existing or planned bike paths would make this very real fear and risk even worse. Thank you
- I live the yarra and cycle to the CBD along these lanes!
- I have lived in Richmond for over five years and have strong ties to the Yarra area. I work locally, frequently shop at North Richmond shopping centres, and enjoy going out to bars and restaurants on Swan Street. I primarily commute by bicycle, as the distances are short and biking is a practical, sustainable way to get around.
- I live, work, shop and commute in Yarra. I cycle, walk, take public transportation and drive in the area; in that order.
- Have been living in Richmond for over 10 years. Worked in Richmond for 5 and my partner also lives and now works in Richmond. We both cycle as a commute and socially regularly. I now commute via bike down Elizabeth St and into the city.
- We ride a lot with our child to school and back each day, shop locally on our bikes always using these safe corridors with bike lanes as riding on the roads can be unsafe, you are trying to both keep yourself and your child safe as you watch for opening car doors or cars overtaking too close and racing past to make the lights. Please please keep the current infrastructure and continue to upgrade the cycling safety on yarra’s streets.

- I live and work in Yarra
- I use the bike lanes on Coppin St and Elizabeth St
- I have young children who need safe cycling areas given the level of car traffic

- Live in Richmond
- I live and go to school in Yarra
- Live and Ride daily.
- Bike is such an easy way to commute because it leads to the track along the river. There isn’t many safe bike lanes exiting that’s leads to the river.
- Live in Yarra/north Richmond (home owner). Commute on the Elizabeth street lanes daily
- I live in, shop, go out, and commute through Yarra.
- I live and work within the Yarra area. I use the Elizabeth Street bike lane on a daily basis – it keeps me away from the cars and makes me feel safe. More bikes on the road means less cars – surely that’s a good thing.
- I live in Yarra
- Live the in Richmond and cycle along Coppin and Elizabeth St on a daily basis.
- I live in Richmond and my family and I regularly commute on bikes around Richmond
- I live and commute through the Yarra, both by myself and my son to school
- I live and commute in Yarra and would like to see Coppin St made into a southbound road only with the north lane being made into a greenway to connect the High School with Mary St Primary and the tunnel to the main Yarra Trail on Mary St allowing a safe North-South route for pedestrians, cyclists and other active transport users. We have an ideal opportunity here to make a world class cycling and walking route rather than ripping up the existing infrastructure. Looking toward 2050, driving will increasingly become obsolete with self driving vehicles roaming the streets and much less car ownership and parking requirements. Let’s be leaders in this and not laggards.
- I live in Yarra and use these cycling routes most days. They make travelling through these areas much easier and less stressful
- I live in Yarra. I rely on safe cycling infrastructure to get around to businesses in the municipality as do my partner & three adult children who live with us. I strongly support the expansion of safe, protected bike lanes in Yarra & am opposed to the removal of existing ones. This issue is extremely important to all of us.
- All the above and I have raised a child who progressed from bike baby seat to tagalong to scooter to adult commuter on the cycle friendly streets of Yarra
- I live here, shop here, and REGULARLY use these bike lanes!
- Live, shop and go out in Yarra
- Live, work, shop
