3. Parts of Yarra Trail closed for maintenance
Sections of the Main Yarra Trail will be closed for
maintenance work between Tuesday, 6 October and Tuesday, 27
October. The work is being undertaken on the Cremorne Rail bridge
by Fitzgerald Constructions. Alternative routes will be provided
throughout this time, and it is expected the work will cause
minimal disruptions to both pedestrians and cyclists. The footpath
underneath the bridge will be closed from Tuesday, 6 October until
Thursday, 15 October. The shared path on the northern side of the
bridge will be closed between 10am – 3pm on the following dates:
Wednesday, 14 October, Thursday, 15 October, Monday, 26 October,
Tuesday, 27 October

Parks Victoria has ensured there is signage installed along the
river trail for alternative routes throughout this time. As this
is not a Council project, for more information please contact Rory
Fitzgerald at Fitzgerald Constructions on 03 9687 5959 or

4. From Senator Janet Rice: Bike Blackspot App Launch &
Bike Meetup - Saturday 17 October
10am - 11am, 17 October, Linear Park, intersection of
Park St and Canning St, Carlton North
Cyclists around Australia are fed up with being endangered,
ignored and neglected by governments. All bike riders can now
share your experiences of our nation’s Bike Blackspots and help us
demonstrate why cycling funding is urgently needed.
Ride down and join Senator Janet Rice for a bike meet-up to launch
the Greens' new and improved Bike Blackspot App - for iPhone and
Android. Together we can build the case for substantial and
sustained funding for cycling infrastructure across Australia, by
reporting potential improvements and danger zones in our local
areas. The meet-up and launch will be held in the park beside the
bike path, where Park St and Canning St intersect. Bring your bike
- all welcome!
5. University of Melbourne Survey: Making Cycling More Gender
Inclusive - survey closes this Friday 16 October
In Australian cities such as Melbourne, women are consistently
under-represented among cyclists. There is evidence that this is
due to various factors which make cycling attractive or suitable
only to a minority of the population. This is is not the case in
cities with significantly higher cycling mode share, such as in
Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands. Previous research has
suggested that one of the most significant of these factors is the
perception of cycling as an unsafe activity.

This research aims to assess gender differences in perceptions of
safety in relation to cycling and what contributes to this in
order to propose how cycling in Melbourne may be made more gender
inclusive, and therefore increase the amount of people who cycle.
This survey will ask you about some elements of your cycling
behaviour and perceptions of safety while cycling. It is not
expected to take more than five minutes. You will also be asked
whether you would be willing to participate in an interview at a
later stage. Participation in the interview is voluntary and you
are encouraged to complete the survey even if you do not want to
participate in the interview.

This survey is part of a study being conducted by Dr John Stone
(supervisor) and Alexander Sheko (masters student) of the Faculty
of Architecture, Building and Planning at the University of
Melbourne. This project will form part of Alexander's masters
thesis and has been approved by the Human Research Ethics
Committee. The researchers gratefully acknowledge the support and
assistance of Bicycle Network with this project.

6. Petition - Build a Bridge over Merri Creek between
Ceres and Beavers Road
Students living in Darebin and studying at Brunswick East Primary
school need a safe route to walk / cycle to school. They are
currently forced to cross on the busy, dangerous Arthurton Rd road
bridge.
Darebin residents living between Arthurton Rd and Normanby Ave
need to be able to safely access the Merri Creek open space and
Ceres.
Moreland and Darebin residents need safe east -west bicycle
connections
A shared bridge for cyclists and pedestrians would connect the
Northcote and East Brunswick communities
