Proposed bicycle route between Clifton Hill and Abbotsford

Council is seeking early community feedback about a proposed new
bicycle route between Clifton Hill and Abbotsford.

Construction of the route is expected to begin in June 2011 and cost
about $280,000.

The route would connect Heidelberg Road in Clifton Hill with Gipps
Street in Abbotsford.

It would fill a missing link between Merri Creek and Hoddle Street
and connect cyclists to other key bicycle routes, providing better
access to other parts of Yarra and the CBD.

Major improvements proposed include:

upgrading the traffic signals at Gipps and Nicholson streets
to give cyclists a ‘head start’

creating a new shared path through the green space at the end
of Bath Street, Abbotsford, and

building a centre median island in Trenerry Crescent to make
it easier for southbound cyclists to turn right into Bath
Street.

Council is investigating whether the proposed median island
might affect parking spaces in the area. Council will consult
with residents in this area if there is any expected impact on
parking.

Other upgrades will better define the route for cyclists, by
painting line markings, establishing lane makers (a raised rubber
separator between the bike lane and the road) and installing new
signage to help cyclists navigate the route. These minor upgrades
won’t affect on-street parking arrangements or access to homes.

The map below shows the main improvements that are proposed for the
route. Some additional upgrades may also be made.

In February 2011, Council will undertake more detailed consultation
and residents will be asked to provide input into projects happening
near their homes.
