1. Cycling into the Future 2013-23: Victoria's Cycling Strategy
*Message from Kate at City of Yarra - Read on if you're interested in
possibly having your thoughts included in City of Yarra's Strategic
Transport and Environment Branch response to the State Government's new
Cycling Strategy.

Hi all,

The Strategic Transport and Environment Branch is preparing a response
to the State Government's new Cycling Strategy. If you would like to
have a read and jot down some notes - we may be able to include please
get them to Kate Simnett, Sustainable Transport Officer --
kate.simnett at yarracity.vic.gov.au by *January 24th 2013. *

Here is some of the information provided by the Department of Transport
& a link to the documents:

"The Victorian Government released its new cycling strategy for
Victoria, Cycling into the Future 2013-23 on 9 December 2012. Electronic
copies of the strategy, the initial action plan and a are available on
the internet at: www.transport.vic.gov.au/cyclingstrategy

Cycling into the Future 2013-23 sets out the Victorian Government's plan
to grow and support cycling across the whole of Victoria.

For the first time in Victoria, Cycling into the Future 2013-23 will
take a holistic approach to cycling by considering the needs of
transport and recreational bike riders, as well as metropolitan and
regional requirements.
The Victorian Government has also announced an $18 million investment to
connect the Darebin Creek Trail to the Main Yarra Trail, completing a
much-needed missing link for bike riders."

2. Attention pedestrians and riders - Walmer St Bridge near Victoria
Gardens is CLOSED from 7/1/13. Please fwd this information.*
Message from Al at City of Yarra - Just a heads up that the Walmer
Street Bridge near Victoria Gardens will be closed for "some time" due
to structural problems.

Walmer Street footbridge closed for immediate repairs
http://www.yarracity.vic.gov.au/hot-topics/walmer-street-footbridge-closed-for-immediate-repairs/

Due to the topography and limited places to cross the river when this
bridge has been closed in the past the detour has not been friendly,
which I expect will occur again. I recommend planning your trip in
advance to take bicycle friendly roads and the extra time required

Any questions should be directed to the City of Boroondara on the
numbers below:

January 7th - Correspondence from City of Boroondara

Dear all,

I wish to advise that Walmer St footbridge ( footbridge over Yarra River
between Abbotsford (CoYarra) and Kew (CoBoroondara) -- at the northern
end of Walmer Street -- not far from Vic Gardens) will be fully closed
to traffic for some time due to structural problem developed on the
approach ramp on the Boroondara side of the bridge.

City of Boroondara is dealing with this matter as they are responsible
for this approach ramp. They have advised that they will install
appropriate signs for the closure today. City of Boroondarra: 9278 4444

3. Capital City Trail diversion at Birrarung Marr between 7th - 13th
January*

Extra note, we've been advised the following from the organisers: /It is
a really small diversion, and it will be signed all the way. We're only
diverting bikes away from Birrarung Marr along Batman Avenue for about 2
-- 300 metres. Cyclists are then diverted back behind Federation Square
(under the overpass walkway). The notice is mainly so cyclists are aware
that the event is happening, and to follow signs and take caution./

*News from Midsumma: Yarra Cycle path diversion *
Please be advised that the Yarra Bicycle Trail at Birrarung Marr will be
diverted for a period of approximately one week, as preparations are
made for the 2013 Midsumma Carnival.

From Monday, 7 January through to Tuesday, 15 January, the path along
the Yarra River will be diverted along Batman Avenue. Please slow down
and take care when using the Path, and be aware that there will be
trucks and construction vehicles in the vicinity working on the Carnival
site.
Riders will be required to walk their bikes during the day of the event
for the safety of the event's 120,000 expected guests. Free bike parking
will be available onsite from 11:00am -- 6:00pm on Sunday 13 January.

On 13 January 2013, Midsumma will transform Birrarung Marr with seven
hours of free entertainment on two stages, and over 80 stalls populated
by community and commercial groups.

For further information, please head to midsumma.org.au/event/carnival.
