*4. **Cycling Course in Yarra - Cycling from a motorist's perspective -
starts Wednesday 11th May 2011*
News from Kate (2): The hook turn might pose a challenge to some car
drivers but that's the least of worries for Yarra's cyclists. Whether
your bicycle has fixed gears or not, negotiating roads and footpaths
carrying a constant flow of vehicles and pedestrians can be enough to
turn some people off the two-wheel commute.
However, you don't have to feel that way. A free course starting in May
aims to give people tips on staying safe while cycling. It will do this
by asking participants to see cycling from a motorist's perspective.
Presented by five experienced commuter cyclists, the course gets into
gear on Wednesday 11 May. Split into two hour sessions held each
Wednesday (from 5.30pm-7.30pm), the course will take place at the
Fitzroy Town Hall over five consecutive weeks.
The first four sessions will provide advice on how to cycle without
dedicated lanes, how to dress, and how to carry cargo and kids, secure
your bike, gain health and fitness, and stay safe. The final session will
get participants onto the road and rail system to experience just how
effective Melbourne's bike and rail combination can be. Course numbers
are limited to 24 people. For bookings, contact Frank Fisher on 0428 862
693. For further information, contact Kate Simnett, Sustainable
Transport Officer, on 9205 5734 or at Kate.Simnett[AT]yarracity.vic.gov.au
*5. Edinburgh Gardens Raingarden Construction Detours*
With the support of Melbourne Water, Yarra City Council is building a
raingarden in Edinburgh Gardens. The construction of the raingarden and
the widening of the main north-south path will commence in early March
and completion is due in late July. During construction it will be
necessary to fence off this part of Edinburgh Gardens for the safety of
park users and contractors. Council apologises for the inconvenience.
This project will harvest stormwater from the North Fitzroy Main
stormwater drain, providing a sustainable irrigation source for
Edinburgh Gardens' historic trees. The raingarden will also help to
improve the health of the Merri Creek and Yarra River by filtering
captured stormwater. The raingarden will be a contemporary landscape
feature in Edinburgh Gardens, comprising terraced gardens of native
plants and a new avenue of trees along the main north-south path. During
construction of the raingarden it will be necessary to fence off the
site for the safety of park users. Detours for cyclists and pedestrians
will apply from early March to late July. Council apologises for the
inconvenience. For information about this project please contact Mark
Donnellan, Capital Works Officer -- Open Space on phone 9205 5724 or
email: Mark.Donnellan[AT]yarracity.vic.gov.au

*6. Safe Yarra Petition*
News from Liz: Yarra residents value walking, biking, scooting, jogging,
skipping and running to our destinations. We choose to live here because
we don't want to drive to school, shops or friends. We want to walk,
ride and scoot around our streets safely. Children, elders and less
agile residents in Yarra want to be safe on their neighbourhood streets.
The City of Yarra is a leading example of how slower traffic is better
for residents. Streets are quieter and safer. Families feel more
confident to go places by bike or on foot. But there's still lots more
VicRoads needs to do to make Yarra streets safer.

*16. The Age - Letting kids ride to school doesn't make you a bad parent*
**Early this month, and quite suddenly, our roads got busy. The reason
was simple: school went back and overnight once-quiet streets were
invaded by vast, urgent fleets of cars delivering children to class in
the morning and picking them up again in the afternoon. This twice-daily
school-gate rush hour is now the norm but it wasn't always. Forty years
ago 80 per cent of Australian children walked or rode a bike to school,
and felt comfortable doing it.

*18. City of London studying introduction of 20mph speed limit*
The City of London Corporation is considering imposing 20mph speed
limits on some or perhaps all of the streets in the capital's Square
Mile under proposals designed explicitly to improve the safety of
cyclists, due in part to a massive rise in the number of people using
bikes there. The reduced speed limit could be applied just to local
streets within the City, London's historical financial district, or
could be extended to "red routes" administered by Transport for London
(TfL), reports the Evening Standard.
