National Guide will support safety for all bike riders   

The Cycling Promotion Fund today applauded the release of the publication
“Cycling Aspects for Austroad Guides”by Austroads.

The Guide supports the safety of allroad users by providing an overview of
planning and traffic management considerations, and a summary of design
guidance and criteria relating to on-road and off-road bicycle facilities.


Peter Bourke, General Manager ofBicycle Industries Australia and the
industry’s Cycling Promotion Fund said, “This is a further step in the
commitment of Austroads to support the work of the Australian Bicycle
Councilas it works to achieve a doubling of people cycling by 2016, the key
objective of the National Cycling Strategy.”

The publication provides guidance forall levels of government in the
design, construction and management of roads to make them safer for all
road users. 

The guide, which comes after the release of the Australian Transport
Council’s draft National Road Safety Strategy, will support governments
to implement best practice bicycle infrastructure for on-road and off-road
situations.

Acknowledging the value and necessity of this information, Austroads has
moved to make this publication free for all users as a download. 

“The inclusion of principles embodied in Cycling Aspects will ensure
greater safety as well as promote improved movement for all road users”
said Bourke.

“We certainly applaud the commitment ofAustroads in developing this
resource and demonstrating their commitment to the objective of doubling
the number of bicycle riders in Australia” he added.
