Hello All,

Further to the earlier advice (see email below), works will soon commence on the timber boardwalk along the Main Yarra Trail near Swan Street Richmond.  The works involve removing the timber deck and replacing it with recycled plastic decking.  As a consequence the boardwalk will be closed for approximately five weeks commencing Wednesday 4th November.  Traffic management activities and signage on-site will direct pedestrians and cyclists on to the adjacent footpath and will cause minimal disruption to trail users during the construction period.

It was announced today that the City of Yarra is to receive $639,000 in Federal Government funding as part of the National Bike Paths Program. The program is a subset of the Government's Jobs Fund and was announced by Anthony Albanese MP, Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government.

Specifically, the program supports new, extensions or refurbishment of existing:
off-road bike paths (but not dedicated mountain bike trails);
on-road bike lanes (e.g. road-widening and marking bike lanes on an existing road); and
bicycle parking facilities.
In Yarra's case, the project entails the reconstruction of the Main Yarra Trail between the Gardiners Creek Bridge and Bridge Road. (see images):

 Council has matching funding in the Open Space Capital Works Budget. Documentation for the pathway is almost complete and with the funding announcement defining the scope of works, the tender could be advertised as soon as next week. It would be expected that construction take place between February and June.

A component of the project, the installation of a recycled plastic deck to replace the timber boardwalk just north of Swan Street (see image) has already been tendered and construction will begin in October.
